Committee Members

I moved to Cumbria in 2021 with my husband Derek and share a house with our son and daughter-in-law. With several years’ experience as vice-chair in Hinkley u3a, I am now applying this in my role as chair of the SLu3a.
Valuing life-long learning, I am delighted to see members enjoying life, enhancing their skills, being active, and socialising. As a retired health care professional and aware of current health-related subjects, I coordinate the Health Matters group. As a published author, I help members of the Creative Writing group to achieve their writing goals. I enjoy research, writing, walking and visiting relatives in the Antipodes.

Vice Chair
Vacant

Having retired and moved to Kendal with my husband, Nick, in 2023, we immediately joined the U3A and eventually, I decided that it was time to get my Excel brain in gear again and volunteered for this role. My work life encompassed finance, HR, IT and sales operations, with my favourite roles being to analyse data and help colleagues to solve their problems with the assistance of technology.
I enjoy working on my garden, my fitness and my wellbeing but I always have a host of craft and DIY projects on the go as well. I'm hoping I'll be able to fit it all in - who knew retirement would be so busy!

I am Chris mostly retired teacher. I taught my entire career in mostly small, primary schools in south Cumbria. I have two daughters and two grandchildren and live in Kendal with my partner Angie. I have only been a u3a member for a couple of years, and hope to be able to contribute to this and other local organisations. I like to spend time in Greece and generally travelling, enjoy sports (mainly watching now) and supporting my family.

I have been a member of U3A for ten years and joined the committee this year. I enjoy going to the theatre, whether it's to see well known professionals or local amateurs in plays and musicals. My greatest passion is getting out and about for walks - whether it's a stroll along a canal or a scramble up one of the Wainwrights. Living in this area for over forty years I still feel very lucky to be able to explore all these wonderful places. Having worked in hospitality all my life I enjoy meeting people and trying to help them in whatever way I can which is what led me to join the committee.

In 2013 after death of my husband I was encouraged to join SLu3a by then members, Toby and Jill Carrick. I joined Singles Table Tennis group and became co-ordinator in 2015 and have continued since.
In 2017 I was 'invited’ by Lynda Wood, the Membership Sec, to succeed her and thus completed 3 years. In early 2022 I took up the mantle again when Kate Kohn had to resign early. At the AGM 2023 another 3 years loomed and I accepted until May 2025.

Co-opted Committee Members

Having spent 35 years in printing and publishing I feel qualified to be your editor. Over the years I have produced newsletters on a voluntary basis for many organisations.
I moved to this area seven years ago after living in Scotland for 32 years. Originally from Bradford I have lived in various parts of the UK. I also spent six years working in Nairobi.
Activities in u3a are coordinating the Mah Jong group and walking with Amblers 3. I‘m a member of Kendal Rotary and also volunteer with SL Talking Newspaper and Holehird Gardens.

For many years I was involved with the u3a Computer group which met weekly from October to Easter. Numbers gradually dwindled and sometimes we had more helpers than u3a members so it never restarted after Covid. However, members who had attended the group would often get in touch if they had a particular problem and I was always happy to help them if I could.
Colin, as Beacon Administrator, asked me to help out with introducing Beacon to co-ordinators and I then became his assistant. The idea is that I will gradually take over his role – but I have a lot to learn.

I have been the South Lakes u3a Website Manager since August 2023.
Information technology and databases have always played an important part in my career. Since retiring I have continued to use these skills supporting other local organisations and have also developed skills in web page creation and management. So taking on responsibility for South Lakes u3a web site and moving it to a new platform has been well within my comfort zone. Setting up our Facebook page perhaps less so– but an interesting learning experience nevertheless!
